Guinea pigs are known as cavy too and are a species of rodents. There are a total of 9 species of guinea pigs. The male is generally known as boars, while females are designated as sow. Their young ones are called piglet or pup. Regardless of their name, they are not at all related to pigs in any way. The average height is 25 cm and their weight may be between 7-1200 gm. Their average life span is somewhere around 5 years. They are natives to South America.
These are active during night. This is mainly because so many predators feed on them. So they come out only in dark so that they can avoid getting hunted. Another thing is that piglets can actually run within 3 hours of its birth. Generally, they live in huge groups and one group is controlled by a dominant one from among them. Wild ones have longer colons. They feed on grass and therefore, they need not store anything. One more thing about them is that they live in burrows, but they never make it themselves. Rather, they prefer other animals’ burrows.
Their hearing, smelling and listening senses are very good. But, their sight is not as good. Also, their teeth keep on growing during their entire life. Normally, they are also used by scientists for conducting various researched and that is why they are called so. They are also domesticated in various parts of the world and are a source of meat. If you too have a pet guinea pig, then make sure you supplement its diet with Vitamin C because it is one nutrient that is missing completely from their body.
